PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. — While politicians often claim that a job can’t be created without a tax break, government subsidy, CRA, or stimulus package, Victory Casino Cruises has proven that a company can create jobs with private investment alone.
Despite three gaming ships having had bad luck with Port Canaveral in recent years, Victory Casino Cruises undertook a $17 million gamble that it could successfully run a gaming ship out of Port Canaveral.
After months of renovations, the 40,000 square foot gambling ship Victory I set sail on its inaugural public voyage on July 29, 2011.
JOBS AND ECONOMIC IMPACT:
Victory Casino Cruises created 450 direct jobs in Brevard County this year. Over 90% of its employees live within a 20 mile radius of Port Canaveral.
Although not specifically measured, VCC also indirectly generated jobs in Brevard through the use of local conractors and vendors.
Hundreds of regular paychecks going to people who actually live in Brevard ultimately affects residential and commercial property values, long-term rental vacancy rates, and local businesses in Central Brevard County – an area which was hardest hit by the end of the Space Shuttle Program this year.
VCC also became a paying tenant with the Port Canaveral Port Authority when it signed a ten-year lease to operate out of Terminal B-2.
LOCAL CHARITY SPONSOR:
Brevard County not only gained 450 direct jobs since the launch of Victory Casino Cruises in Port Canaveral, but a very active sponsor for charities as well.
On September 7, 2011, Shirley Buchanan, VCC’s Brevard County Central & North Sales Representative, presented checks to the three local charities and said, “United Way of Brevard has been there for those who have experienced employment hardships. Central Brevard Humane Society has been there for the animals by providing food and shelter. The American Red Cross provided food and shelter for more than 1,000 people around the country just this past Monday, including residents impacted by Hurricane Irene. Victory Casino Cruises recognizes your service within our community.”
During Labor Day weekend, Victory Casino Cruises sponsored the National Kidney Foundation Surf Contest at the Cocoa Beach Pier.
On September 11, VCC recognized Patriots Day by throwing an environmentally-friendly wreath from the ship while out at sea and raised charitable donations by selling T-shirts to support USA Cares.
EXPANSION:
Since its maiden voyage, VCC expanded its passenger amenities in 2011.
Club V, the bar and lounge located on the upper deck, is in full swing showcasing a variety of DJ’s from Brevard County and beyond.
Meanwhile, on the outer deck, the Dolphin Bar is open for passenger to enjoy the sea breeze a sunshine during the trip out to sea and back to port.
INFORMATION:
The four deck ship features buffet dining and live entertainment. Alcoholic drinks are free while gaming. In addition to slot machines, over 30 tables games are available such as blackjack craps, roulette, and poker. The ship sails twice a day Monday through Saturday, and once a day on Sunday.
