BREVARD COUNTY, Florida — Waste Management announced today that it will be demonstrating a new, state-of-the-art collection truck in Brevard County, Florida on Wednesday, October 10, 2012.
The truck, powered by compressed natural gas, is significantly quieter, has dramatically reduced emissions and is powered by American-produced fuel, cutting fuel imports.
The truck will visit the following locations on Wednesday, all of which are open to the public:
9:00am – 10:00am: West Melbourne City Hall, 2240 Minton Road, West Melbourne
10:30am – 11:30am: Melbourne City Hall, 900 E. Strawbridge, Melbourne
12:30pm – 1:30pm: Cocoa City Hall, 65 Stone Street, Cocoa
2:30pm – 3:30pm: Wickham Park Pavilion, Wickham Road south of Post, Melbourne
4:00pm – 6:00pm: Waste Management, 7382 Talona Drive, West Melbourne
(Talona Drive is accessed from Wickham Rd. 2 blocks south of NASA Blvd)
Educational information and giveaways will be distributed at each location.
Since the beginning of 2012, WM has opened 13 compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling stations across the country, including Pompano Beach and Venice in Florida, bringing the total number to 31, an industry best.
At each of these sites, Waste Management purchases the fuel, finances its construction and uses its bargaining power to secure more favorable natural gas prices. This, in the long run, lowers the costs of maintaining a fleet. In addition, Waste Management further optimizes costs by using a fueling capacity process that allows vehicles to run 10 to 12 hours a day without having to refuel, making routes quicker and more efficient.
The strategy has shown to be so affective that another 17 facilities are slated to be in operation, or set for construction, by the end of the year. Many of these will also be open to the public, bringing in additional revenue and allowing the company to provide a solution for customers that perhaps never existed before.
BENEFITS OF CNG
Compressed natural gas (CNG) is one of the cleanest fuels currently available for use in heavy-duty trucks. Replacing a typical diesel engine with natural gas can reduce:
· Up to 86 percent of air particulates
· 80 percent in carbon monoxide
· Up to 50 percent in nitrogen oxides
· 25 percent in carbon dioxide
In addition, each heavy-duty diesel collection vehicle replaced by a CNG vehicle leads to a reduction in diesel use by an average of 8,000 gallons per year, cutting annual greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 22 metric tons. The trucks are also significantly quieter, which customers appreciate.
With nearly 1,700 CNG and liquefied (LNG) vehicles in North America, Waste Management has the largest green fleet in the waste industry. In 2012, natural gas vehicles will represent 80 percent of Waste Management’s annual new truck purchases, a trend that will continue over the next five years.
These steps towards creating a greener fleet have not gone unnoticed. In 2011, the Clean Vehicle Education Foundation honored Waste Management with its Natural Gas Vehicle (NGV) Achievement award for “innovative leadership” in transforming to a natural gas fleet. In addition, Energy Vision honored the company for its “strategic vision and leadership” in rolling out 1,000 CNG vehicles and opening its Altamont Landfill producing renewable energy gas for the fleet.
