CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida – The City Council of Cape Canaveral will consider closing beach parking during a Special Meeting at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 2, 2020,  at Cape Canaveral City Hall.

The City of Cape Canaveral had previously enacted beach parking closures from mid-March through May 9th due to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic in conjunction with other statewide closures and stay-at-home orders issued by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

During that time, the tiny beach town of about 9,000 residents had enjoyed relatively low numbers of coronavirus cases with only 3 cases total up until June 14th.

That number suddenly spiked to 34 in just over two weeks on July 1st.

The recent spike in cases corresponding with the influx of out-of-state tourists and Orlando daytrippers has alarmed several local residents that this increased activity from out-of-area visitors will continue to spread the coronavirus in Cape Canaveral.

Residents who wish to speak at the meeting

All persons entering City Hall must arrive with a mask and wear it at all times inside the facility and have their temperatures taken.

Due to Social Distancing, only 20 audience members are allowed in the Chambers, additional persons will need to wait in the lobby.

Space in the lobby is limited to ten persons and those wishing to speak will be escorted in and out at the appropriate time.
